Blue Nose Surf offers SUP sales and rentals, so you can explore Alaska on your own (lessons if desired). If you don’t have your own wet or drysuit, we rent those as well.

We lead group tours in the summer, and we also offer surfboard rentals and lessons for the intrepid, to take advantage of the surfable wind swell we occasionally get in winter.

Paddle Surfing

Stand-up paddle surfing (SUP), or in the Hawaiian language Hoe he'e nalu, is an ancient form of surfing. It has recently re-emerged as a way for surfing instructors to manage large groups of students. Standing on the board gives instructors increased visibility of what is going on around them — such as incoming swells.

The sport provides athletes with a strong core workout. SUPing is popular at warm coastal climates and resorts, and SUPs have been spotted around the globe — anywhere that there is easy access to safe waters — as well as in the surfing lineups of the world.

Order of the Blue Nose

Blue Nose Surf was named after the Order of The Blue Nose, a fraternity for sailors who have crossed the Arctic Circle. Initiations were commonly conducted by the Royal Navy, U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Marine Corps, other navies and the merchant marine to commemorate a sailor’s first crossing of significant milestones at sea.

The most famous and common line crossing is that of the equator. In these ceremonies, the initiates are nicknamed Pollywogs and must appear before the esteemed and royal court of King Neptune (Boreus Rex in this case, Ruler of the North Wind and Sovereign of all the Frozen Reaches), Queen Aphrodite, the Royal Baby, Davey Jones and other assorted and nefarious characters who will judge them worthy to enter the realm.

Prior to the royal presentation, “wogs” must learn proper royal etiquette and may have to swim through the belly of a whale, get a royal haircut and take truth serum to ensure veracity in court. After passing judgment and being declared a True and Trusty Brine Encrusted Bluenose, the sailor was allowed to proceed into the Land of Icicles, Blizzards, Williwaws, and Myriad Snowflakes.
